ED:

I appeared at the entrance to the armory at 9:00 a.m. I went inside and asked the desk sergeant to announce me to General Coleman. I heard a yelp when I was announced, and suddenly the big man appeared in the door of his office and grabbed me up in his huge arms in a big bear hug; I could hardly breathe.

"Why are you here Ed? I don't care! I'm just glad you are."

He set me down. I caught my breath and said, "I'm here to help you in any way I can, I am, after all, your Lieutenant General."

"Well, that's just grand. I really need a man who can delegate, there's so much to do.

"I am going to give you 20 officers and 500 soldiers, to do some really important preparation work. If you do this, it will free Ted and me to take care of some of the administrative details.

"First, we need to clean and police the entire base; the grounds, the barracks, the mess hall, and all of the outbuildings.

"Second,

I heard a yelp when I was announced, and suddenly the big man appeared in the door of his office and grabbed me up in his huge arms in a big bear hug; I could hardly breathe.

"Well, that's just grand. I really need a man who can delegate, there's so much to do.

"I'm going to give you 20 officers and 500 soldiers, to do some really important preparation work. If you do this, it will free Ted and I to take care of the administrative details.

"First, we need to clean and police the entire base; the grounds, the barracks, the mess hall, and all of the outbuildings.

"Second, we need to test and repair, if necessary, all of the big tents and pup tents and make sure we have sufficient ground covers, and blankets for each soldier.

"Third, we need to check and make sure we have, at least, 5,000 salt bags filled up and ready for a march.

"Fourth, we need to dig and set up latrines all over the base and especially where the soldiers will be bivouacked.

"Can you get a handle on all of these tasks all right?"

"Yes. I will get them all accomplished."

"I think that we shall aim for early Thursday afternoon, to become prepared for the expected new troops.

"I have already chosen 1,000 soldiers to come out of the field and become part of the Special Forces unit. They should all arrive today, so cleaning the barracks should be a first consideration."

Adam gave me a list of officers and said that he would have them come to my office in 30 minutes; he then walked me down the hall and showed me a nice office with a metal desk and chair, and seating for about 30 people. Next, he introduced me to the desk sergeant and told him which office I was in.

I settled into my office and found a bottle of rye in the bottom left-hand drawer of the desk.

There was a knock on the door, and the Sergeant announced the arrival of the 20 officers. I invited them in and they filed in and took seats. They each carried a notebook, and one of the men carried a set of blueprints for the base.

"Gentlemen, I do so welcome you to this meeting. I am in great need of your help and knowledge.

"We have been given the challenge of completing three tasks by Thursday afternoon, and another fourth task by Saturday a.m.  Lieutenant Stars is rounding up 500 soldiers to do those tasks, as you lead them, and they will be ready when we have finished this meeting.

"The four tasks are to prepare the base for the influx of approximately 4,000 soldiers expected between tonight and Saturday morning.

"We must clear and police the base; test, and repair-if necessary-the tents; make sure that we have 5,000 salt bags filled; and we need to dig and build about 200 latrines around the base, and particularly the bivouac area.

"I thought that all of us would work on cleaning the buildings and clearing and sweeping the grounds as our first priority."

I gave each of the officers, 25 men to work with. I told them that 1,000 Wale soldiers and approximately 30 officers would be arriving before dark.

Tomorrow Ed and his soldiers police the armory and accomplish an extraordinary amount of work. The first soldiers arrive.
