First, let me apologize for not having a blog up yesterday and for being so late today in getting my new blog up. Our Comcast went down yesterday leaving us with no television or computer services.
Today Tom, Wills, & Bond start on their spy mission to detect if there are any infiltrators from Gog's army in the land of Wale and surrounding Vulpan.
THE GOD GAMES: Legend of Kor...Chapter Seventeen
We started out Tuesday morning at 5 a.m., before Veral had risen. It was cool and damp and little rocks constantly slipped under our feet. By noon we had crossed the Lora and Specto Rivers and followed the Specto River around Wale's mountain ranges. We stopped for lunch before we left the river, which had become a navigable stream as it rose to its source in the foothills of the Wale Mountains.
We looked out over the forest that lay ahead of us. There was no telling where Gog's men could be. So far they had seen no signs of his men's presence. But another turn could show up the enemy.
We saw an opening in the pines before us, and when we investigated we found a primitive path probably used by the forest creatures.
The trees were so thick that very little Veral light came through. The darkness made it hard to see the ground in front of us, so we walked very carefully one foot in front of the other.
We pressed on for several hours until it became too dark to continue. Then we ate our cold dinner of tuna and hard-boiled egg salad, pumpernickel bread, celery, oranges and apple juice. There was a bag of chocolate chip cookies for dessert.
We made up our beds and called it a night. The new spring weather had taken the chill off the ground and the air around us was sweet and warm. We fell asleep immediately.
We woke when Veral began to rise. We quickly ate breakfast and cleaned up our area. We pressed on and walked for many hours, stopping only to eat a good lunch
We began to walk around Vulpan an hour after lunch and we had been making good progress when we suddenly heard voices ahead of us. Wills signaled us to be quiet and to walk softly into the trees. We all disappeared in an instant, and once we had cleared enough space to avoid being seen, we got down on our stomachs and watched the trail.
Soon, two men came walking down the trail. They were Gog's men and they were arguing about Gog. The taller man was passionately arguing that Gog was a great blessing to all of Selve while the other man made rude noises.
Wills motioned for me to stay down and he motioned to Bond to follow him.
The woods became silent as the two voices walked out of earshot. There was deep silence as I felt my aloneness in these woods. Where were Wills and Bond? What about the two Selve spies?
RATaTaTaTaTa! RATaTaTaTaTa! The sound exploded through the trees. I heard the Selve spies's screams, then prayers to die, and then deep silence again.
Suddenly, Wills and Bond stood in front of me. I jumped to my feet. "What's going on? Was that you?"
"We shot the Selve spies," said Wills.
"That was you?"
"Yes; who else?"
"Where are they?"
"They're where we left them."
"Shouldn't we do something with them?"
"Well, come with us, and we'll dispose of them."
So we started down the trail until we saw two heaps of green and black lying on the ground. Wills poked the bodies with his rifle and there was no response so Bond and Wills dragged the bodies off the trail and into the forest.
When they came back on the trail they had papers in their hands. I asked them what they had and they showed me the spies' identity papers. Wills unfolded the papers in his hand and read the name, Bob Thiel, of Mano, Selve. Bond opened the papers he had, and the name he read was Rave Gilbert, of Mano, Selve.
At first I didn't make any connections to the names, but something was nudging the back of my mind...Rave; Molly's husband's name was Rave. Could it be the same person? I looked up into Wills' eyes, but he was just staring at Bond.
"Wills," I said, "Wills, do you think this Rave could be Molly's husband?"
Wills looked at me with a blank stare. "I don't know," he said, "I think maybe it is. This is really going to hurt Molly. Just think, it might have been my bullet that killed Rave. Molly will never forgive me. I wish we could take a picture of their faces so we could make sure."
"I have a camera built into my Auto-GPS on my operational belt; I'll go take a picture of both of them," I said.
After taking the pictures, I walked back to the trail and handed them to Wills. Wills put them in his back pack and said that we would call it a day. He felt that there was no point in going any farther along this trail because Gog would spread his spies over a large area and wouldn't have anyone else come down this same trail.
As we walked back down the trail again, Wills kept to his own thoughts and Bond and I were also silent. I knew Wills must be very conflicted and that he had a hard task in front of him, so I left him alone to his thoughts.
When we reported back to General Coleman, on Friday night, we told him about the two spies we had killed. It seems we were not the only ones to find and kill a Selve spy. Five groups of our soldiers had discovered, and then killed, ten of Gog's spies, and most of the groups had yet to return.
Wills asked Adam if he could go to visit Molly at his home that evening, and Adam said that he would be honored. He invited Wills to spend the night, and Wills said that would be great.
Tomorrow Wills breaks the news of the death of Rave Gilbert to Molly and the children.
